Solomon and Sheba

Solomon and Sheba

"Solomon and Sheba", Ethiopian, 1960

Makeda, or the Queen of Sheba as she more widely known, is first introduced in Abrahamic religions through her action of seeking out King Solomon’s renowned wisdom. However the Kebra Nagast, a holy scripture in Ethiopia, has Makeda in a more significant role. According to the Kebre Nagast, not only had Makeda conducted trade business with Solomon, but she additionally used the wisdom she sought from Solomon to increase her own knowledge for the benefit of herself and her kingdom. Additionally, she raised the son that she had with King Solomon on her own, until he was made King of Ethiopia. This painting depicts the meetings between Makeda, the Queen, and King Solomon.
