Two Boys

"Two Boys", Paul Cadmus, Not after 1936. Ink and gouache on paper. The Robert Hull Fleming Museum

By masculinizing Two Boys on a Beach, Paul Cadmus depicts what audiences thought a homosexual male should look like. This look was conforming to the heterosexual ideals of masculinity prevalent at that time and was meant to stigmatize and erase the feminine gay male from society.
