Title: fumigation of ground beds
Author: Wilson, Sandra
Abstract: Fumigating beds. Yoder Brothers is meeting the mandatory methyl bromide reduction by using steam sterilization for some of their beds. Stationary boilers with overhead pipes leading to the beds were installed to treat one-third of their 1.3 million square feet of beds. The method works but is more than twice as expensive.
Description: Yoder Brothers Inc., Fort Myers Florida. Encompassing 118 acres, the Alva Farm grows most of Yoder's chrysanthemum cuttings. Potted dormant azaleas are Alva's second largest crop. Alva has also become one of North America's leading propagators of poinsettias. Yoder's breeding activities for pot mums, garden mums, azaleas and hibiscus are done in Fort Myers as well.
